I once knew Dr. Lanny Hunter and this book reads like a fictionalized catharsis of the Viet Nam experience he likely observed first hand. It is a people story and not a war diary. Hunter and his brother who is co-author will never win a Pulitzer but this is a book that communicates with those who have "bonded in battle". His descriptions of the places, procedures, relationships and events of both Viet Nam and Kansas are extremely precise. The development of the characters and some of the story line are questionable but the obvious interactions of people involved in that period of American history is on target. This is one of those treasures you frequently find browsing the used book stores.
