Like most western law men, the pay is usually terrible and Deputy Marshal Custis Long wants a pay raise. This western yarn begins with Deputy Marshal Custis Long complaining about his salary and how hard it is to save anything on a law man's pay. When he went to see his boss, Marshal Billy Vail, to ask for a raise, he also ran into Lila Chandler who was also in the office talking to Marshal Vail. The remainder of the story involves Deputy Marshal Custis Long taking a little vacation that does not turn out to be much of a vacation at all. In fact, things turn real bad at first before the happy ending. Without giving away the plot and spoiling it for the reader, all I can say is that this is another well-written, easy to follow adult western that fans of the Longarm series will enjoy.
