Book Overview

Grow closer to God through six weeks of prayer focused on a specific spiritual topic.

Since their original release in the late 1980s, the Take and Receive prayer-book series has sold more than 150,000 copies, and its five themed books are hailed as classics in the Ignatian prayer tradition. The first two books in the series are being repackaged and reprinted by Loyola Press.
Love: A Guide for Prayer and Forgiveness: A Guide for Prayer provide topic-based opportunities for people to grow deeper in their relationship with God through prayer. The theme of each volume directly correlates with a segment of the Spiritual Exercises, though no previous experience with the Exercises is needed to benefit from these books.
Covering 36 days over a six-week period, each day offers scriptural passages with commentary, followed by a suggested approach to prayer for that day. Especially helpful is a section at the beginning of the book that explains the different types of solitary prayer that readers will be asked to engage in throughout the six weeks, such as meditation, contemplation, and centering prayer.
Ideal for all who desire a closer relationship with God, these books help us reimagine what it means to pray and help us see with new eyes God's presence and activity in our daily lives.

A Present help at a confused time.

I went on a retreat with only the chorus to the song, Blessed Assurance. The Spiritual Director at the retreat recommended the chapters 1,2 and 3 of the book. Though I was unable to ploy through all three chapter; chapt 1 and 2 helped me to bring clarity to my plight and open my mind up to my own personal issues while experiencing the love and plan of God for his people. I saw God's plan from a different persepctive and that I am part of his plan and as such healing went forth. Soon I will continue in the study.

Love: A Guide for Prayer, the first in the Take and Receive Series, offers six weeks of prayer that will lead Christians to more deeply experience God's love, to recognize their total dependence on him, and to respond in freedom to praise and serve him. The meditations are based on the model of conversion found in the Principle and Foundation section of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. Love: A Guide for Prayer will meet readers wherever they are in their spiritual journey and lead them to the fountain of love and mercy which is Christ. These revised and updated editions offer 36 structured meditations, providing a relevant Scripture passage, an incisive commentary, and a suggested approach to prayer for that day. Designed as a support for private prayer, these exercises can also be used in prayer groups, faith-sharing communities, and Bible studies. Spiritual directors and retreat leaders will find the series to be invaluable in bringing others to Christ.

Exercises helps with prayer, meditation, and contemplation.

Exercises helps with prayer, meditation, and contemplation. A wonderful guide if you are not naturally meditative.

Have read it in another language...

When I ordained as a catholic priest, I feel myself just like a house woman who have to think about what should I have to prepare on the table for my family to eat, therefore, I just go to the marcket;bookstores, university classes, famous lectures etc. One of jesuit priests recommended this book and we did spiritual exercises in daily life. I have changed somehow after doing this book. Thanks to authors.

Excellent for developing a sense of God's love for us.

The book gives readers a chance to explore their relationship with God through scripture, guided meditations and prayer. I was not able to get through the daily exercises in a day, however. There was too much to ponder. I came away with a clearer sense of God's love for me. The writers are to be commended for writing an accessible book that leads to a deeper relationship with God for both Protestants and Catholics. Highly recommended.
