The major transport task facing most poor people is to move relatively small loads over short distances, usually off-road. Poor people have very limited access to motorized transport, and even animal-drawn carts may be unaffordable to many households. There is however, a range of lower-cost transport devices which can reduce the time and effort spent in transport compared to, for example, traditional headloading. These are the basic transport technologies described in Low-cost Load-carrying Devices. They cover: carrying aids such as shoulder poles and back-frames; wheelbarrows and handcarts; carriers and panniers for bicycles; and load-carrying panniers for animals and animal-drawn sledges.
