1950s Colorado. A dreamy five-year-old son of a welder concludes that a good life depends on communication and transportation, particularly on getting away. Not for Tim Barlow the tedious "real" world touted by adults. Later, seeking to distance himself from overseers, Barlow acquires a succession of old cars, hoping each will hold together long enough to deliver him to necessary jobs, dates and promised lands. LURCHING TOWARD YONDER is set in the 60s and 70s, when gas was cheap and you could sleep all night in your car. To drown out a worrisome engine, you cranked down the windows and sang till your chest hurt. Back then songs were worth singing, vagabonds more garrulous, and the American roadside less predictable. No diamond lanes. No fast-food drive-thrus. No self-flushing toilets.
