Martin van Buren (1782 - 1862) was the first United States-born President and the only President to speak English as a second language (his first being Dutch). Van Buren served as Secretary of State and later Vice President under Andrew Jackson as well as the United States Minister to the United Kingdom, Governor of New York and as a United States Senator from New York.
