First published in 1920, this volume contains a selection of meditations by the French poet Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869), chosen and edited by the Cambridge scholar Hugh Fraser Stewart. Each of the twenty poems is presented in the original French with source attribution given in the footnotes. A short introductory note in English provides a background to the poems and offers some thoughts by Dr Steward on Lamartine's standing as a poet and political figure.
