For Harriet Delvaney, the great house of Menfreya, standing like a fortress on the Cornish coast, had always been a citadel of happiness and high spirits. Not until she herself came to Menfreya as a bride did Harriet discover the secret family legend of infidelity, jealousy and murder. And not until the legend seemed to come dangerously to life did Harriet begin to believe the old story that when the tower clock of Menfreya stopped, someone was about to die . . .
My mom read this to me as a kid and I absoluely loved it! The story was great, the character is someone you really feel for and the ending is a SHOCKER! I will say this, Victoria is a great, classy author with a beautifully smooth and elegant style of writing. She also knows her history and always uses the correct language and clothing for he era. At times she can be a little too wordy and overdescriptive but it's all worth reading in the end. Holt is NOT your average bodice-ripping steamy romance writer. There are no graphic love scenes and no 'dirty' stuff. She is more about being sensual in a subtle way. Her plots are amazing and she really takes the reader on a journey. I'm surprised her books are not more popular, with all the trash out there these days, it's really nice to read a good, solid and classic kind of story. This book really hooked me. I would read it again in a heartbeat!
Another Masterpiece from Victoria Holt!

Harriet has grown up with so little love that when she marries Bevil, she is suspicious of his love for her. As her suspicions grow, so do her reasons for it. She soon finds her marriage - and life - in danger. Only at the climatic ending does she find the truth about everyone in her life.An amazing plot with an amazing ending: just what to expect from the greatest gothic novelist, Victoria Holt.
This was an intriguing book! I could not put it down!

I loved the entire book from the setting to the plot. Once I started reading this novel I literally could not put it down. The book had very interesting and developed characters. It is a romance and me, being a hopless romantic, found this book utterly satisfying. It also kept me in suspense. Was Bevil faithful of not? I would reccomend this book to any one who needs a little romance in their life or anyone who needs to hear a good story.
