Messianic Psalms

The name Messianic has been given to those psalms that include one or more verses quoted in the New Testament as direct references to Christ. (Both Messiah in Hebrew and Christ in Greek mean "the Anointed One"). One writer has listed the Messianics this way:

The same writer warns: "We must be careful to distinguish between the spiritual experience of the psalm writer and the prophetic reference that he makes to Christ. Psalm 69 is an example. When David exclaims, "God, you know my folly, and my sins are not hidden from you," it is evident that he is referring to himself. But when he says, "They also gave me gall for food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink," it is clear that the words are messianic. The New Testament uses them in Matthew 27:34, 48. So we have to carefully distinguish between the spiritual experience of the psalm writer and the prophetic reference to Christ himself.
