The Best Resource for Developers

This is still the best book out there for developers looking to extend and customize SharePoint Portal Server. It provides detailed step-by-step instructions for customizing the UI and insight into the ways you should and should not use SPS. Highly recommended.

The review by Tobin Lewis is right. This isn't a resource book. And the authors do occasionally get in way too deep ( the chapter on the doc store lost me so quick i got whiplash ). There are not that many books on SharePoint out there, kids, and this one is still the best by far. It is short ( in computer book terms ), to the point, packed with info and, in some places, relatively easy to read. This is the book if you are looking to do more than admin a Sharepoint implementation, i.e. customizing and/or understanding the product. And if admining SharePoint is all you want, stick to what Microsoft gives you for free, it's better than the other books available ( or, in some cases, the same thing ). And check out the Microsoft newsgroup. that may be the best resource available ( isn't that scary )

SharePoint Portal Server is a relatively new Microsoft product, released during the middle of 2001. Currently (as of January 2002) there is only one other book available for sale on the topic (The Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Resource Kit).Whereas you'd expect one of the first books to appear on SharePoint Portal Server to do little more than cover out of the box features of the product, this book goes much farther. It covers the standard features of the product, but also goes under the hood to explain how the product works and even explains how to perform "unsupported" customizations of the product. Then the book goes even further by showing you how to extend the product on your own to create custom knowledge sharing applications. For the reader that is just experiencing SharePoint Portal Server for the first time, this book may quickly dive into more technical detail than you're prepared for. However, as you begin real-world deployments of the product, you'll quickly appreciate all the extra research and advice that this book provides.
