For over 60 years, Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology has been the textbook of choice for cosmetology education. Mostly basic girl knowledge, shocked there are college classes on this
Published by Black Cat , 2 years ago
I really do not understand why this book receives top billing. Even as a college textbook, which in the modern era contain notoriously little information as students are forced to purchase them regardless, it has very little that I did not learn growing up. In fact, it has less. No book should tell you to "ask your professor" for almost every chapter. The point of a book, especially an educational book (and I am frankly appalled that there are even college classes on this stuff) is to impart the author's knowledge. If half of the book is telling you to ask someone else, the book is a waste of the materials used to make it.
I gave three stars only because not everyone is taught this growing up, even if roughly fifty percent of the English speaking human population probably is (as this copy is in English), and because it does have one useful section on hair relaxing. This should absolutely never have been something people think you need to go to school and go heavily into debt for.
Great

Milady's Standard Cosmetology 2008: Exam Review (Paperback)
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 15 years ago
I bought this book to help me test myself on the theory of doing hair. I also bought Milady's Standard Cosmetology 2008: Theory Workbook (Paperback) in conjunction with the exam book. I have been been going over these exercises while studying people and their hair at my sisters salon. This exam review came heavily recommended through much research. I find the exam book to be quite useful in reviewing my knowledge from the other milady texts. Make note though, this does not do much good UNLESS you have the other Milady texts to read and study from!
If you have to take state boards this is the book you will need
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 19 years ago
This book makes certain that you have a good understanding of the material before you take your state boards and this is very important. You probably will not have the same questions on the test, or they may be phrased differently: but the book definatly covers each chapter well!

This is an awesome book for the Esthetician just starting out and those who need a re-fresher. Purchased this book at a convention and cannot put it down. Highly recommended..
This is the book my Cosmetology School uses (2000 edition)
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 23 years ago
I bought the 1996 version of this book in June of 2000 and within one month I was signed up for cosmetology school. Then I got to school and they used the 2000 edition so I was already prepared. For those who think this book doesn't go into detail please realize that this is a textbook and it is part of a series of books for teaching. There are 2 workbooks that go along with this book. One for Theory and one for Practical. I was given a 1990 edition of this book as well by a friend of mine. The most noticable change between the 3 editions is that the 2000 edition has more actual photographs and fewer illustrations. If you are using this book for school study then I do recommend you buy the state board exam review booklet. Then when you have free time you can quiz yourself. Just remember that this book is meant to be used along with an instructor. If you are looking for a haircutting book only then I don't think you want this one. It only has about 12 pictures.
