This book like an onion has many layers. When I read the first couple of chapters I was dicouraged because the portrayal of soldiers in Vietman didn't appear to be realistic. My mistake because the meat of the story is not the war but the journey the 3 men take in finding themselves. As the book continues and you travel with the men on their journeys they became like friends that you wanted to see find the answers and peace they were searching for. It is a travel book as you travel with the men throught Southeast Asia. It is a book on religious beliefs as the men search the religions of the area and try to find answers there. It is a love story as all the soldiers meet different people in their lives that change their lives forever. I found as all 3 took very different paths to find a contentment in their lives and you knew the book was coming to an end that you wanted to check to see if there was a sequel. Somehow Mr. Boland quietly has entwined them into your mind and they have become friends that you hate to say good-bye to. This book is well worth the time to read and will stay with you long after you close the last page.
