The Trailsman ,after a hard days travel, decides to stop in Springfield ,Missouri for a bit of wiskey, women and cards. It is 1861 and life can be filled with surprises, and instead of some well needed R & R ,Skye is soon in for some of the toughest encounters imaginable. Mad Dog Terrell and his gang of merciless killers have been causing havoc ,and getting away with it for much too long. Skye and a posse go after him into the mountains, where Mad Dog has set up a strong hideout. The story is filled with lots of action and the cunning of Mad Dog and his gang seem to be more than Fargo and the posse can handle .However; one thing in Fargo's favor is a girl ,Bobby Jo who becomes part of the posse. She is from a reclusive ,and as tough as they get family, who have decided to live by themselves and do their own fighting. She knows the country and becomes Fargo's greatest asset when they are captured by Mad Dog's gang. However ,she has a big surprise for Skye, and it looks like the best that he can hope for is a quick death at the hands of these sadistic killers. The story is well constructed ,has some great characters, lots of exciting situations and will keep your interest till the last page. Bobby Jo might sound like the name of a sweet little country girl;but Fargo gets surprised time after time, with what a bundle of dynamite he has teamed up with.We meet some pretty tough "Calamity Janes" in the Old West, but this Bobby Jo makes them look look a bunch of school marms or sunday school teachers. You're gonna love her;I know I did,and so did Skye,in the end.

Skye Fargo is just passing through Springfield, Missouri, when he makes the acquaintance of comely Lucille Sparks. Lucille has had her fill of the frontier and when she takes the stage out of town, a local gang of lowlifes led by Mad Dog Terrell swoops in and kidnaps her. Now, as part of a ragtag posse, the Trailsman is going to teach Mad Dog some new tricks...like playing dead. As is expected from a Trailsman novel this book is filled with action, cliff-hanger situations that keep you reading, and great characters. Mad Dog and his gang of outlaws are beautifully created and will have the reader urging Fargo on to deal them some frontier justice. The members of the posse are equally well drawn and the conflicts of character amounst them make for some great reading, not to mention some hilarious dialogue. And what of the women? Lucille Sparks and Bobbie Joe, both are strong in character and are more than just conquests for Fargo, both having important parts to play in the fast moving storyline. The plot is extremely well crafted and you have to wonder how Fargo will escape with his life from a number of dangerous situations he finds himself in. And as the book races towards its bloody finale the reader can't help but get caught up in the twists and surprises the author has waiting for them. Great, too, to see references made to a previous Trailsman book - #149: Springfield Sharpshooters. Another very good entry into the Trailsman series, one that I highly recommend to all fans of westerns.
