Book Overview

When Kenneth Earl advertises for someone to help him catalogue his vast collection of music, Maggie -- the final candidate -- is his last hope. What he doesn't know, however, is that this isn't the first time that Maggie has been to Earl House, and it's no coincidence that she applied for the job. As a child, Maggie and her mother lived near the river that runs past the house. Maggie's memories of that time are patchy, like pieces from a jigsaw puzzle that don't quite fit: she remembers Kenneth's son, William; a boat; a dog; she remembers children singing, and being alone, afraid. She remembers -- afterwards -- returning home, mute, refusing to speak. For her, going back to Earl House as an adult offers the chance to fill in the gaps and finally, perhaps, lay the ghosts of her childhood: for her, as for William, this is her chance to reclaim her past. Written in clear, ringing prose, The Song House is about language and music, memory and place, about who we are and the narratives we weave about the events of our lives. Beautiful and haunting, its cadences, themes and characters will resonate with the reader long after the final page is finished. 'An extraordinarily instinctive writer with a delicate feel for language' Observer

Very understandable explanations

Advanced accounting is an area where understanding the concepts that underlie procedures is crucial for solving new problems. This clearly written book excels at giving you the conceptual understanding you need to solve the problems you see on tests. It is especially good in explaining the knotty area of accounting for intercompany transfers.I recently finished a demanding advanced accounting course for which I picked up this book to supplement the advanced accounting text used in the course. I learned much more from Larsen's book. Despite my somewhat thin at the time background in financial accounting I received an A- in the course. No way that would have hapenned without studying this book. I am sure it will also help in my CPA test preparation. The separately available study guide has good practice questions.

Advanced Accounting by E. John Larsen

This book emphasizes the advanced accounting subject areas forthe Uniform CPA Examination . It has a strong rendition ofpartnership accounting, consolidations and eliminating entriesfor intercompany sales, investment income, cost of sales andminority interest computations. There is good coverage ofthe specialized topics in advanced accounting; namely, installment sales, present value computations and the non-profit accounting sector which may be tested on the Uniform CPA Examand graduate-level exams. The book is a worthy purchase. The Web dimension of the presentation adds considerable value to the overall purhase. Advanced accounting courses require preparation and considerable problem solving. Both aspects are emphasized heavily in the current rendition.
