In this accomplished, comprehensive and accessible book Barry Smart explores these questions. The book examines the social and economic processes which have shaped and continue to shape life today. It also provides exemplary critical assessments of the various 'modern' and 'postmodern' thinkers who have sought to explain these processes. Judicious in its judgements and superbly informed, the text is a major contribution to the debate on Modernity and Postmodernity.
I bought this way back in 91 or 92. Really fun geeky almost philosophical stuff. Basically, change is modern and there is no such thing as postmodern, it is only modernity continued. We are now reaching a point where change has accelerated to the point that even reality will no longer be based on reality. Think that is meaningless? Think of a website as being the "real" form of artwork. Thus the reality (website) is no longer fungible, no longer real. Also contains the longest sentence I have ever read. It is over one-page long. One sentence, one page. Like I said geeky fun.
