When two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs launched MoveOn.org in 1998, they had no idea that they would be hailed as powerful and influential political activists or grow their online advocacy group to 2 million members in just a few years. Their simple mission--fueled by passion for a more open and democratic nation, topnotch and timely information, and the financial support of concerned individuals and organizations--was to jumpstart broad civic dialogue and enable ordinary citizens to effectively voice their political concerns. In the spirit of simplicity and empowering the citizen, this book is an essential "how to" for becoming politically informed and involved. In this handbook for change, MoveOn members from around the country have written about what it means to be a responsible member of a democracy--what they have done in the past and what they are now doing to help make the United States more accountable, forward thinking, and a better place to live. The 50 Ways range from simple ideas, such as "Tell a Friend about a Petition" to more dynamic suggestions, such as "Organize a Constituent Meeting," and the editors at MoveOn provided action items and resources for those who want to take inspiration a step further.
If you are a Republican like me, don't pass on this book just because it is from MoveOn!! An unbiased look at democracy and the difference we all can make, it's a MUST READ for anyone who wants to get more involved in the political process. I rather doubt the "one star" ratings even took the time to look at the book. Get past your bias and pick up this book!!!
I loved it and am not a leftist at all

I think everyoen from all parts of the political spectrum will enjoy this book. As a lifelong Republican I have to say that people here denegrating this book haven't read it at all. It is a very good illumination of how curruption and failure to participate have undermined American democracy.Indeed our local school board place this book on the required reading list at our high school...and we are a Republican town!
Participatory Democracy

This is a book that teaches citizens how to participate in our democracy. Those who are actively trying to discredit moveon are literally trying to actively discredit the millions of individuals who are channeling their efforts through it. This is a book for anyone wanting to take action -- whether you are Democrat or Republican. It teaches you to vote, to organize people, to sign petitions, to write letters, to support clean elections and to organize house parties in support of candidates and issues. In short, it's a guide to taking political action and maximizing your impact as you participate in our American Democracy.
Negative reviewers miss the point

The point is that we live in a country where our voice, our vote, COUNTS. Whether you are pro or anti-choice, whether you are pro or anti Bush, whether you are Democrat or Republican, this book details ways to participate in our democratic process. Speaking out, voting, protesting, petitioning, writing letters to your editor, whatever! These are the privileges of a free society, and this book is all about ways to exercise our freedoms.
Important, Deeply Inspiring and A Fun Read Besides

The best thing about all the stories in this book is that they are true. If you've every wondered what real democracy looks and feels like when it flowers in contemporary America, this book provides at least 50 different examples. I thought it was just as fun to meet the people telling the stories as to hear their insights.I hope that this is one of those books that leads each person who reads it to make their own, personal, enjoyable statement as a citizen activist. Our stepping out beyond the phony Coca Cola patriotism of the Bush administration into something real and authentic is not only life affriming, but critical to America at this time, IMHO. It may not always be easy, but this book shows that you will be rewarded in ways you could never have imagined.
