Book Overview

C.S. Lewis likened hard times to "God's megaphone," a season when the Creator's ways are made clear and proven merciful. Mustard Seeds author Lynn Coulter agrees, writing here across fifteen essays about the natural graces and "God signs" that emerged during a three-year period of hardship and sustain her faith today.

From personal events (her parents' deaths, a job loss) to universal cripplers (stress, worry), Coulter's fresh anecdotes unearth the little daily markers of God's love and care while staying rooted in Scripture. Her writings fuse the observational strength of Anne Lamott's nonfiction with the warm delivery of Sue Monk Kidd's devotional books and are sure to be passed around as tools of encouragement and faith strengthening among friends.

Chapters include "Used People," "Deep Healing," and "Nothing without Joy."

Endorsements

Starred review. Coulter, a magazine journalist, takes the familiar biblical story of faith the size of a mustard seed to illustrate how God can use even the most horrendous "lifequakes" as faith-builders. Coulter opens her compilation of life essays with a personal story from her childhood, when the concept of mustard seed faith was first planted after a teacher offered the class mustard seed charms as an attendance reward. Though Coulter eventually lost the charm, she never forgot its message. Years later, after the death of her parents, her husband's job loss, financial setbacks, and her own shattered shoulder, the author's faith was in pieces. She wrestled long and hard to regain closeness with God. In each of these tender topical chapters, Coulter uses everyday happenings from nature, parenting, work, illnesses, and church to reaffirm a single lesson: God is intimately involved in every aspect of life and he cares with a watchful affection. Readers will find strength from Coulter's story and solace in God's promises regarding faith and grace.

Mustard Seeds: Thoughts on the Nature of God and Faith

Excellent book because it is a gentle but truly stated experience that the author has with God. I enjoyed reading how she lives her life with God as her focus and it brought me more understanding in my own faith. Thanks for such a nice easy read that brought a calmness to my soul.

Fresh and Honest Faith Stories

From page one on Coulter draws in the reader with her engaging story telling in Mustard Seeds. She does this by using her mustard seed trinket from her early faith as a metaphor of a child-like faith rediscovered in a grown up world. The narratives compellingly weave in Coulter's real-life experiences to candidly share how we can misplace our faith--just like her mustard seed trinket--in our post-childhood days with the distractions of devastation, busyness, and just about anything else that takes our eye off the ball in matters of faith. Coulter is a winsome and poignant traveling companion on the journey of faith. Her insights and overcoming faith found in this gem have deepened my faith and nurtured my soul. Mustard Seeds is a must read.

A beautiful guide for everyone's spiritual journey

Lynn Coulter's Mustard Seeds takes the reader through a honest, heartfelt recounting of how her faith suffered during a time of tremendous personal loss in a short time span. Coulter relates how her faith was restored in ways both large and small and in so doing shows her readers that many things we take for granted are actually opportunities for spiritual growth. I started reading the book from the perspective of how to find God's love during times of stress but soon realized that the beautiful lessons shown in each chapter can strengthen one's faith during good times as well. Mustard Seeds is a perfect gift to yourself or anyone else you care about!

Touches with a warm embrace of encouragement... Promises to grow your faith

Mustard Seeds is truly a book that feels like spending time with your best friend. Lynn Coulter gently takes your hand, assuring of God's deep and abiding love, especially in the midst of your most difficult times. A gifted writer, she shares her own "lifequakes" with honesty and intimacy. Her words are eloquent and simple, giving many visual "seeds" promising to nurture, water, strengthen and grow your faith. My favorite chapter is "A Fragile Peace". Tender, comforting and filled with wisdom, Mustard Seeds touches with a warm embrace of encouragement from a dear and trusted friend. This is a book I will read again and again. I cannot wait to read Lynn Coulter's next book! As with faith and friendship, Mustard Seeds is meant to be shared, and is perfect for gift giving.

Beautiful, lyrical devotional about faith

Mustard Seeds by Lynn Coulter is a wonderfully uplifting devotional about finding little things that can help your faith to grow. Coulter suffered from a horrifying number of tragedies and frustrations in a short period of time: her husband lost several jobs and then moved hundreds of miles away to take a new one. Her mother passed away unexpectedly, and her father began to fail with the heartbreak of it. Coulter shattered her shoulder, and the events nearly shattered her faith as well. She uses each chapter to encourage your faith in God to grow, like that of a tiny mustard seed. Jesus said that if we only had as much faith as the size of a mustard seed we could move mountains. Coulter uses hers to move the mountains of doubt, anger, grief, and pain and return to the God who never left her. Her honesty is refreshing, like a cool drink of water. I enjoyed spending time every day with Coulter.
