It can be appreciated by students at differing developmental stages: young kids as a cute story about a frog and the fireflies and also for younger kids who are quite advanced in understanding math concepts. This book encourages reading, understanding the meaning of numbers squared, and touches on the fact that a frog would normally eat fireflies instead of needing their assistance (science). It's such a simplistic, yet direct approach to square roots, that I immediately included it this summer in staff development presentation bibliographies for elementary teachers and librarians. It's a rarity to find books on square roots for young children.
