"Like all good stories in the Yiddish tradition, the pleasure of Geras' collection comes as much from the telling as from what happens. These are stories within stories: the narrator remembers herself as a young child hearing them from her grandmother, as they cooked, hung up laundry, prepared for the Sabbath, or cleaned house for Passover. This framing of the stories emphasizes their continuing pleasure across generations; and customs, idioms, traditions, even recipes that the Jews brought with them from Eastern Europe are an unobtrusive part of the telling."--"Booklist," Starred
This book is read over and over to my children. The morals and lessons taught are great. It is even a great read for the adults. It is a book worth having.
Wonderful Bedtime Stories
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
I've recently enjoyed reading these charming stories to my son for our bed time routine. The stories are usually long enough to put him to sleep, but not so long that my throat is sore. They're fun stories with some morals to share with your kids. Recommended.
Cooking Up Grandmother's Stories
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
Every story (each ties to a household object) includes many possibilities for cooking which delights ME (author of RECIPES FOR READING) and encourages young (and formerly young)readers to concoct recipes to amplify and fill out the stories. If every family had a collection of grandmotherly tales like this based on household things, there would be no hope for FootballOnTheTube as a holiday mainstay.
