The title aptly describes the difficult but triumphant life of Helen Bowers - living in the darkness of a tunnel, and her difficult but ultimately successful path to a better life. I enjoyed every moment of it! I gave the book to my parents who also loved it, especially the references to the historical milestones and public figures from their generation.

This book is a fabulous example of how an impossible situation can turn out with a happy ending. I was unable to put this book down once I started. Helen's story is inspiring and touching. I give her immense credit for pulling through and making the best out of life.

This book is based on the life of my aunt. To me this book was extremely enlighting. I enjoyed the book and the true stories that you see on tv are not the same. With this book it has given me the opportunity to know more about the roots of my family and what they endured when they were growing up.
