MY SUMMER WITH GREAT AUNT CATHERINE by John Wheaton This is a semi-autobiographical story - based on real people and real happenings - set in Johannesburg in the Southern Hemisphere summer of 1992/93, on the threshold of a New South Africa. It is the coming-of-age story of an 18-year-old boy who accompanies his Great Aunt in order to learn about her businesses before deciding on a course of study. He also accompanies her to the awesome desert country of Namibia, the unspoiled splendour of the Transkei Wild Coast and the tropical lushness of a war-impoverished Mozambique
A typical teenage boy, he is crazy about cars and food - and enjoys indoor activities like dancing and cards and becomes hooked on outdoor activities like sailing and gliding. He learns a lot about business, something about the evils of Apartheid - and quite a bit about women and sex - always surrounded by the often hilarious interactions between the characters that make up his circle of friends and family.
