The setup for this book is riveting: Five fourteen-year-olds are contestants on a reality TV show, Antarctic Survivor, which is set up to re-create Robert E. Scott's 1912 doomed attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole, in a world where adult reality TV involves real injuries and death. The producer of this new show has decided to push the boundaries of edu-entertainment and doesn't care if the contestants are hurt or killed - she only cares about ratings. Andrew, Polly, Robert, Billy and Grace all start off with different attitudes towards the show, but as they struggle ashore to Antarctica and deal with the first real disaster, they begin to understand how much trouble they're in. What they don't know is they have a secret ally, if only they will listen to him... I liked this book not only for the adventure the contestants were going through but for the subversive plot their hidden ally was a part of. While the contestants were facing 'real' challenges with cold, ice, crevasses, and threats to their horses and dog team (all apparently historically accurate) their ally was using a high-tech but mundane job to get around the uncaring people in control and maybe influence the whole country.
