This work is a guide for anyone preparing for the NBCOT exam. The text has been revised and expanded to better help students through the studying process. The text is divided up into four sections: getting ready; study techniques; study questions; and life after the exam. The first two chapters deal with a general overview of the examination process. Also included are numerous tools to get organized. The second section includes chapters on content and using fieldwork experiences to guide students through the studying process. The third section contains 550 study questions set up in the same format as the certification exam. The last section deals with life after the exam and provides practical advice if things do not go well.
Sladyk's study book was one of the major tools I used to prepare for the OTR exam. Her inclusion of explanations to the answers (both right and wrong) was the most useful feature of the guide, providing the reader with instant feedback and info. A suggestion for future editions would be to include references with the answers so the reader could access additional information. Occasionally there would be an answer that I didn't understand and I REALLY wanted to read more about it, which isn't always an easy (or quick) task when you're not sure where to look first. Also, this study guide does not reflect the recent format change of the NBCOT exam. The exam now asks questions in a more problem-solving/case study style rather than the "reciting facts" edge it apparently used to have (or at least so I had heard). The NBCOT Study Guide (although pricy at $40) was very helpful with enlightening the reader with the new flair of question format. Karen Sladyk has also published (through Slack as well)a box of OT study cards, which are SO GREAT. I owe a friend of mine (Libby) bigtime for giving me these handy cards. Wow. Concise. Granted, they don't go into extreme detail, but Sladyk and her colleagues choose words wisely for the limited space. Don't shove these in the closet when the exam is over. They're too useful! Best of luck for anyone studying for the next OTR exam.
