Don't get me wrong, the writing is beautiful at times, but for a book that's just over 100 pages the author has way too much going on but not enough pages for good development. I didn't feel connected to the characters because I didn't have time to get to know them in depth, and there were so many that it was a struggle to even remember names. Even the main side character that's supposed to be integral to the plot is hardly mentioned and we barely interact with her. And the most intense things that happen in the story have little to do with our main character. There's people she interacts with that seem like they'll have a lasting effect, just for them to never be mentioned again or their sub plot being sloppily wrapped up last minute in a paragraph later. The concept was great and it seemed like a promising story at first but Sallis dropped the ball my trying to accomplish too much in such a small number of pages.
