Throughout the world the 20th century has been a time of expansion, both in terms of population growth and technological advances. In recent decades we have seen discoveries and inventions that have made our life on this planet more comfortable, convenient, safe and profitable. There is a price to this progress, however. As more and more people cover the globe and try to change it for their own purposes, the earth suffers. The chemicals we have come to rely on pollute the water and the air. When we cut down forests to make room for people, we destroy wildlife and change our climate. We have developed nuclear energy to meet our need for electricity, but we cannot dispose of the waste it generates. If we do not change our ways, and soon, our quest for progress may well do us in.
