An entertaining, inside glimpse of Jesuit training.

I first read Frank Peters' book "Ours" ten years ago. I have read it several times since then, and still find it a fascinating piece of "coming of age" writing. The uncertainty and wonder of beginning a life in "The Society" when he was only 18 is clearly and humorously told. The friends Mr. Peters makes and characters he meets while at St. Andrew on Hudson Seminary are typical of all adolescents, except for their special schooling and desire to become Jesuit fathers. I enjoy Mr. Peters' writing style. It is relaxed and understandable to those of us who know little about the Society of Jesus, or the Roman Catholic Church. I hope he will, again, write an autobiographical book about his life after leaving the Jesuits.

Reminiscences of the past can be tricky: even a hint of score-settling and one soon finds oneself reading a kind of MOMMIE DEAREST "pathography." But Peters is a born raconteur with nary an ounce of bitterness in his body. This is pure delight, almost as pleasant, one imagines, as sitting around the dining room table with him on some weekend at his country estate (this is clearly a man with a country estate for weekends, no?) listening to him tell whimsical stories of mad Jesuits.
