In this story of love and loss, Tibor Schroeder, a Christian and reservist in the Hungarian forces allied with Nazi Germany, and Hedy Weisz, a young Jewish woman meet and fall in love during the Second World War - a time when romantic liaisons and marriage between Christians and Jews were not only frowned upon but against the law. Not knowing of the dangers that await them, Tibor and Hedy pledge their lives to each only to be torn apart when Hedy and her family are herded into one Nagyszollos' ghettoes. Twenty-five years pass before the lovers are finally reunited in Canada. Based on true events, this sprawling love story of hope, courage, and redemption will stay with readers long after finishing the book. A documentary, based on this story, from Postmodern Productions is scheduled for release in March 2009.
This book vividly brings to life what things were like in the build-up to WWII in Hungary. It really gives you a sense of what the life experience was for people at that time, and the writing really enables you to see it firsthand through the eyes of the characters. I found the situations they faced post-war particularly interesting -- there was much more chaos afterward than I had ever before appreciated. It's a story of courage, bravery, and ingenuity as much as about love, and it's definitely a page-turner.

This is an amazing story - weaving history with interesting characters, set in the cultural microcosm of a small town near the Carpathian mountains. Two families' lives are intertwined in the events leading up to World War II -all based on a true story. It was interesting to read about the challenges the villagers had to face, as changing boundaries and new governments disrupted their lives. It is a fascinating read with great characters; a young man devoted to a woman he knew was his true love. Very well done!
