Book Overview

Does your child react strongly to noises or smells or textures that other children take in stride? Or does he or she beg for more touch and massage, rocking until he or she is dizzy? This child may be living with a little-known condition called sensory processing disorder (SPD). Kids with SPD may seem unduly sensitive to physical sensations, light, and sound, or they may seek out sensations that might make another child woozy. SPD can make it hard for kids to concentrate in school, engage in social events, and live peaceably with other family members. Until now, there have been only limited resources for parents of kids with this condition, but in this book a child advocate and child psychologist offer a comprehensive guide to parenting a child with SPD and integrating his or her care with the needs of the entire family.

The book describes the symptoms of SPD and offers an overview of what it means to live with and care for a child with the condition. It provides a range of activities that help strengthen family relationships, improve communication about the disorder, and deal with problem situations and conditions a child with SPD may encounter. Throughout, the book stresses the importance of whole-family involvement in the care of a child with SPD, making sure that everyone is given the attention they need. Finally, you'll read real-life stories providing ideas that you can put to work in your own family.

Family Relationships and SPD - A Unique Resource

Due to their sometimes unusual reactions and needs, parents of children with sensory processing disorder may need additional levels of patience, compassion and understanding. With this book, parents are given valuable tools to strengthen their relationships and to help their special children reach their potential. Through their own personal stories and the examples of other parent-advocates, the authors illustrate the tensions of living with children who have different aspects of Sensory Processing Disorders. They authors impart a concrete message of hope and encouragement with their advice on problem solving, coping strategies and relationship building. A useful book for professionals serving families, as well as parents who wish insight into their family dynamics.

Fabulous Resource!

This book was just what I needed! I'm always trying to find other parents who have experience with sensory kids and this book had lots of stories, practical hints, and thoughtful reflections from parents in many different situations. I came away with lists of resources to go to, but more importantly, I came away appreciating our family and was motivated to laugh with my kids and husband more. I'm so grateful the author took the time to put all the information together to address this issue -- especially since he's a busy parent too!!

Compassionate and informative

This book, on a burgeoning subject, is packed with stories, tips, and resources, and covers all aspects of life and parenthood (including chapters on the too-often ignored subjects of sibs and marriage). A fine read straight through, or, as the authors recommend, taken in short bites as the reader skips from subject to subject. Probably everybody knows some parent, sib, or other relative who would find this book a godsend!

Best Book Out there on SPD

Great author who offers many perspectives on raising a child w/ special needs. I will read this one over and over, and will make sure my husband and parents read it, too. Every aspect of life is considered; it informs you, challenges you, and inspires! A must read for anyone who has a child with SPD or any similar "diagnosis".
