It's May of 1972 in Nashville, Tennessee, and Ken Chaney is experiencing quite the rollercoaster ride during his last week as a student at Southern Baptist-affiliated Ward College. There's the affair he's having with his faculty advisor, final examinations and an honors presentation looming menacingly ahead, his car breathing its last and the soon-to-be loss of his job, and in between a lion's share of beer and grass he's also busy trying to keep the love of his life from marrying another guy. Lesser fellows might crumble under such pressures, but Ken Chaney can take lickings like this and keep on ticking. He is, after all, born and raised in mean and wicked East Nashville, so he's seen plenty of tough days and nights in his time. He knows what to do when the hounds of hell start nipping at his heels, and he's waiting patiently for that great golden day when he will triumph over the world of long odds and windmills that evermore keep doing their best not to tilt.
