Pathways to Discovery: Exploring America's National Trails

This is a 1991 snapshot of the National Trails system in the United States, including scenic, historic and recreational trails. Divided into five chapters by region, the book examines The Sheltowee Trace (KY/TN), The Florida Trail, The Benton MacKaye Trail (GA/TN/NC) in the southeast. Moving to the northeast we visit The White Mountain Trails (NH), The Long Trail (VT), and the Potomac Heritage Trail (PA/MD/DC/VA). The midwest is represented by The Ice Age Trail (WI) and the North Country Trail (MI and OH). In the Rockies we find The Colorado Trail, the 10th Mountain Trail (also CO) and The Paria Mountain Trail (AZ/UT). Finally in the far west The Pacific Crest Trail (OR), The Mount Saint Helens Trails (WA) and The Santa Barbara Trails (CA) are presented. As always the National Geographic authors and photographers have masterfully captured the natural and cultural diversity of these trails. This volume is part of the National Geographic's Special Publications Series, one of the best-kept secrets in the world of books. Since 1966 the Society had released four titles per year.
