This contemporary novel centres on Jayne, whose husband, Bobby, has run away after their business collapsed. Jayne and her teenage son live near Bobby's overpowering mother, Gill. Through the winter, while the son builds a new life, both women wait for Bobby's return and swap stories. As the two share their life stories with interlinking themes of insanity, addiction and delusion, they soon realise their own pretences that Bobby will return are flimsy indeed.
