Part of the Pet Lover's Guide series, this volume presents detailed information on alternative therapies for both dogs and cats. Written in a clear, simple manner, the book is divided into three main parts. Part 1, on diet and natural therapies, addresses the importance of diet for pets, and discusses the pros and cons of both commercially available and homemade diets. It also covers the basic explanations of the various alternative therapies widely used by holistic veterinarians and readily available to pet owners (e.g., supplements and herbs, acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic and other manual healing). Part 2 makes recommendations for specific health conditions, such as skin problems or digestive tract problems, and describes how various alternative therapies are used alone or in combination with allopathic therapies to treat or relieve the condition. Finally, Part 3 offers an overview of health maintenance and preventive health, and includes information about vaccinations, flea and tick control, weight control, and caring for the aging pet.Full-color line art and photographs illustrate various plants and herbs, and also techniques such as manual therapies, massage, and other hands-on healing techniques in a user-friendly and easily identifiable manner.Special boxes labeled "Where We Stand" present the author's strong opinions on specific (sometimes controversial) issues in a highlighted, easy-to-find format.Key terms are highlighted, making them easy to locate and reference - these terms are also included in the glossary with clear, simple definitions.Important information is bulleted and placed in a shaded box, bringing the main points to the reader's attention in a quick and useful way.Clear readability makes information easily accessible to pet owners, helping them to better understand natural therapies and their uses in treating pets. It also enables veterinarians to carry the book in their practices and recommend it to clients.Written by established, recognized veterinarians, this book is a reliable source for veterinary professionals.
Best herbal and homeopathy advice for treating my ill cat
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
I have used this book since my 5 YO cat was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I have used the Bach remedies to treat her anorexia (Gorse) and Beech to manage her brother's aggression who had stalked her. I have recommended to my sister-in-law Rescue Remedy to manage her cat's OCD and chewing her cat fur off in manic fits based on the information contained within this book. The book provides diets, and holostic practices in addition to not ignoring western medicine. I do not know what caused my cats's hypercalcemia, bladder infection with subsequent stones, and ultimately IBD, but she was near death and being managed by 5 vets. It was the homeopathic vet (in an other state by telephone consultation) that advised remedies, that I believe, detoxified my cat and made receptive to addtional medical therapies. It was due to her homeopathic remedy treatments that got me interested in these therapies and this book. The book is written at a laymen's reader's level without a lot of medical terminology to confound the reader. I still have a very sick cat, but at least she is eating and putting on weight. I am still giving her remedies based on this book's information. I would recommend it to anyone who has a cat or dog and obtain some of these remedies (Whole Foods has a homeopathy section) available at home for when needed to manage stress, seperation anixiety, anorexia, etc. You may find you will start taking some yourself since they are for humans and animals. I bought this book and gave it to my holistic vet who is managing my cat since I believed she would be open to the suggestions contained in this book since she does acupuncture. Good Luck and be careful of those excessive vaccines and overuse of antibiotics, the underlying etilogy of my cats IBD......STS

Dr Fougere offers some excellent, balanced advice. Readers will appreciate the fact that she views alternative modalities as a valuable adjunct to, and not a substitute for, traditional veterinary medicine. The colour photographs are stunning and the price makes this a perfect gift for the keen pet owner.
