Pete works, part time, in a variety of settings (bakery, deli, theater) to earn money to buy airplane models he can build to feel part of aviation. He loses his virginity and thinks he's in love. Trying to make amends he is rejected. WWII sees his oldest brother nearly killed, a bitter hero. Pete haunts a Navy recruiting office and learns he is qualified to someday be Naval Aviator. He has to go to boot camp, finds a Navy program that opens the door to his dream, works hard at his education, and complete basic training by doing carrier landings. He meets his future bride, Eileen. He works at becoming a Navy fighter pilot and after difficulty wins his wings.
