This revised fifth edition of the PHTLS textbook is the required book for the PHTLS course, and is also ideal for use as the trauma component of a paramedic course or as a general reference book on trauma assessment and management. It combines both basic and advanced trauma concepts and skills in one definitive resource and now features an entirely new chapter on evidence-based guidelines for military medicine, developed by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care. PLEASE NOTE: The Instructor''s Manual and Slide Set are available for certified PHTLS Instructors ONLY. They are ordered through Mosby but customers must first obtain an "access code" from the National PHTLS office - (800) 94-PHTLS or (601) 924-7744. PHTLS (Prehospital Trauma Life Support) is a continuing education program authored and administered by the PHTLS division of the National Association of EMTs (NAEMT) in conjunction with the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons. The PHTLS textbook is the required book for official PHTLS courses. However, it can also be used outside of the course, adopted or purchased as a stand-alone textbook or reference book. This one book covers both basic and advanced level training. More information on kinematics than any similar book on the market. Airway, Thoracic and Spinal Skills are presented in a heavily illustrated, step-by-step format. Consistent approach! Each body region chapter features info on anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, assessment and management giving the reader a systematic way of looking at trauma. PHTLS 6th edition, had numerous upgrades from the last edition. This book was very informative of the new procedures we are seeing in prehospital care. It was written for paramedic level of procedure, but was still written to be understood by an EMT-B. The DVD was excellent example of the hands on procedures, unlike the 5th editions CD. A must read for the emergency care personnel.
Excellent trauma reference for first responders

This book is an excellent piece of literature for first responders wanting to expand their knowledge of handling trauma patients. This book deals with the topic using an entirely new and innovative approach. First, they start talking about the kinematics that result in trauma, and focus on teaching the reader on how interpreting and figuring out the event preceeding the trauma can give a better understanding of the injuries (external and potentially internal) the patient is suffering, and how to care for them, on the pre-hospital environment, without delaying transport to an appropriate medical facility because of executing unnecesary interventions. The book not only deals with advanced life support procedures, but it deals greatly with basic procedures, so in the end, PHTLS is suitable for ANYONE that works with trauma patients on the pre-hospital environment. When you buy the PHTLS book, be aware that you are going to read a book made with a totally differente approach. Think later of the methodology of care the PHTLS tries to propagate and you'll find out that, today, it is the best approach available for dealing with trauma patients. You won't regret this purchase!
Excellent resource

I'm a new EMT-B and I bought this book for more in-depth explanations about what we were learning in the EMTB national curriculum. This book combines both the "why" and the "how" for trauma. The first chapter is a bit dry, but the chapters on shock, head injuries, and spinal trauma, for example, are first rate. I never could figure out why PASG (MAST) usage was presented so vaguely in the AAOS textbook. Well, this manual just comes out and explains that the use of the PASG is controversial and often ineffective. Thumbs up, even if you aren't taking the course (although I hope to this year)!
Great reference...

Great reference book that has a lot of detailed information not found in many of the books used for EMT curriculums.

this is a great book for medical and emt students who wish to not only learn the methods of pre-hospital life support but also to understand it. the book is divided into seventeen chapters covering the basics of trauma life support according to the injured systems such as "head trauma , spinal trauma , shock and fluid resuscitation etc..." . each chapter starts with a scenario of a trauma which "teases" the reader to pay attention. all chapters begine with the physiology of the injury and it's various implications on all the systems. continuing with the pathophysiology , the types of injuries related , the asseassment ,managment , summary and review questions and answers. all chapters include lot's of helpfull illustrations and pictures. including anatomical ilustration , x-rays , real life injuries and step to step instructions to specific skills such as immobilization skills. the book also deals with subjects such as initial care of the child , initial care of the elderly, millitary medicine and about the trauma systems. I found this book to be extremly helpfull in understanding and teaching PHTLS and hope it will continue to improve the care admistrated to patients out side the hospital.
