Though the premis is great, the actual amaturish writing style was difficult to stomach. Not a page turner. Agenda driven story. Completly predeictable, on the verge of silly, I'm not kidding! Hire a real writer/storyteller and this story could be great. As it is I had to force myself to go on. I made it to the 2nd chapter, but gave up after that. I'd actually be embarrassed to tell anyone I ever read this book, it's that bad.
A good book for students who are studying American History

The book "Pike McAllister" helps to bring alive the history of the United States during the Civil War. It combines elements of slavery, the Underground Railroad, relationships between slave owners and their slaves, and family values. This would be excellent reading for students who may be studying the Civil War in American History.
As interesting for parents as it is for their young people.

Stephen Hahn did a remarkable job creating an adventure that rings true on many levels. The characters and settings are believable and the attention to detail remarkable. It was refreshing to learn more about what was happening on the homefront during the civil war, though the battle scenes were chillingly vivid. All in all it was a satisfying read.
