In this thoroughly modern guide, author Percy W. Blandford focuses on styles in use today, many tailored to new synthetic ropemaking materials. He untangles the secrets behind a fascinating array of knots, including: Basic knots, from common bends to bowlines Joining knots, including the "weaver's," "surgeon's," and "thief" knots Running and multiple loops Fisherman's and climber's knots ... plus many other varieties, as well as the best way to secure loops, rings, and hitches. A detailed look at splicing ranges from fundamentals to methods for use with braided rope and wire. More than 290 diagrams appear throughout the text, illustrating the step-by-step formation of every knot.
If you need to know more knots than are in this book then you would most likely have other books in your library on knots anyway. This book covers methods of natural fiber cordage, new nylon synthetic rope and wire. I would recommend this book to sailors, fisherman, campers, hikers, climbers, survivalists and other outdoor people who need to learn/become more knowledgable or brush-up on the most commonly used knots and more complicated knots/ropework/splices etc. An excellent book for someone who is just starting to learn knots and expects to take it further than the basics. Here are the 25 chapter titles: Cordage, The End of a Rope, Basic Knots, Single-Strand Knots, Joining Knots, Fixed End Loops, Running Loops, Multiple Loops, Without the Ends, Hitches to Spars, Special Hitches to Spars and Posts, Hitches to Rings and Hooks, Constricting Knots, Fisherman's Knots, Climber's Knots, Belyaing and Making Fast, Basic Splicing, Other Eye Splices, Other Splices in Stranded Rope, Braided Rope Splices, Wire Splices, Lashings, Purchases, Netmaking, Decorative Ropework. There is also a useful glossary, additional reading and index.
Best of its kind I've found and I've looked for many years

I'm a 47 year old man who's spent his entire working life in the marine industry. Knots are a hobby of mine and every time I'm in a bookstore I look for books on knots. If you want to know how to tie a certain knot and do it right, this is THE book. The author even includes the history of many of the knots. The key word is "practical". Not a lot of fancy stuff here. The illustrations are simply the best there is.

I am a 47 year old man who first went to sea as an ordinary seaman at 21 years of age and am still at it. Over the years I've bought many books of this type and can tell you without a doubt that this is the best I've seen. There is so much more here than you need. He writes so well and even includes the history of many of the knots, which I personally love. The word"Practical" says it best. It really is. Far and away the most important aspect of the book however are the super clear illustrations. There simply are none better.
