Jessica Andersen has certainly hit her share of foul balls in the Harlequin leagues, (MANHUNT IN THE WILD WEST, anyone?) but with this off-beat tale she scores the romance equivalent of a stand-up double. Goth chick Ike Rombout is the kind of heroine who would send any old school romance fan straight to the smelling salts. A tough chick who wears black, sleeps around, and likes to be on top -- in more ways than one! Ike is just the type of girl who doesn't want your standard-issue Alpha male protector. Of course, that's just what she gets, since ex-FBI agent William Generic Bigmuscles is the only one who can protect her from the Nine, an elite group of mad scientists who want -- guess what? To take over the world! Ike is the best reason to read this book -- she explodes romance cliches every time she opens her mouth. What's wonderful is the way she hates all the things romance heroines are "supposed" to love, especially makeup, nice clothes, and having men protect her from the bad guys. But that only makes it more chilling when an obsessed stalker captures her at the end and almost -- but I can't tell you the end. This is one off-beat romance you have to read for yourself!
