Si la posterite a fait de Demosthene (384-322) l'un des plus grands orateurs attiques, celui-ci eut des emules des l'Antiquite. Parmi eux, Denys d'Halicarnasse (54 avant J.-C. -8 apres J.-C.) lui consacre une longue partie de ces Opuscules Rhetoriques. D'abord admirateur de Lysias, Denys, qui prone la purete de l'atticisme contre le style emphatique et excessif de l'asianisme, ne tarde pas a se tourner vers l'auteur des Philippiques. Derriere l'admiration se lit le projet pedagogique de Denys: proposer aux etudiants des modeles rhetoriques. Or, connaitre Demosthene et ses procedes stylistiques dispense de toute autre etude puisqu'en lui sont rassembles, de par sa position moyenne, tous les styles et toutes les harmonies, en une synthese aussi brillante qu'originale. Autant qu'un hommage le texte est un modele qui ravira les lecteurs tant de Demosthene que de Denys.Notre edition presente en un volume distinct l'opuscule consacre a Demosthene. La notice introductive fait le point des connaissances sur ce texte a la composition complexe: mutile en son debut, le traite aurait ete redige a des periodes distantes de la vie de l'auteur. Les trois types de style, eleve, simple et mixte sont eclaires et illustres, tandis que sont proposees les informations necessaires a la bonne intelligence du propos. Les comparaisons, dont le texte abonde, entre Demosthene et les grands auteurs, Lysias, Isocrate, Platon et Thucydide, font l'objet d'une etude rigoureuse. L'histoire de la tradition manuscrite est brievement rappelee. Des notes accompagnent la lecture et sont developpees, en fin d'ouvrage par des notes complementaires. L'ouvrage est en outre enrichi d'un Index Nominum ainsi que d'un Index locorum et operum.
