Great introductory book

A great introductory book into the world of underwater sound. Not too theoretic, easy to read and understand. The author begins from the well known sonar equation, and then explores all parameters in it in subsequent chapters. If you are a beginner, this is definitely the book you should start with. Very informative graphs, mostly taken from navy and marine company archives are used. This is also an impressive point. However two points to mention: For those interested in underwater sound hardware and transducer design, these subjects are not dealt in this book (I would recommend Wilson's and Stansfield's books for this subject). For those interested in studying the theory of underwater sound in detail, this book is just an introductory book, it does not include even the basic theoretic subjects e.g. derivation of the wave equation (I would recommend "Physics of Sound in the Sea - Chapter 1" for a perfect theoretical dealing). To sum up, anyone who is interested in underwater acoustics should own this book.

An excellent introductory text to the subject of underwater acoustics. Structured according to the different factors of the sonar equation, the books leads the reader into the various aspects of the subject. I was happy to learn that this book is once more in print after a long period in which it was unavailable. In short - a must for every person interested in the field.
