Reminds me of the great Andre Norton Sci-Fi I loved to read in the 80s and 90s

Mr. Bowers book was quite enjoyable. I like the protagonist and eclectic supporting cast. It is a little slow to start but the structure of this tale is well thought out. Very unique concept well thought out. Believable enjoyable ride for a reader who enjoys old fashion Sci-Fi of the 60s. only a minor short fall for me was the somewhat simple sentence structure and vocabulary used in telling the story, but the story and development of characters make it well worth reading. All in all a nice summer read!
A good read for its genre

This book had believable characters and a fast-moving plotline. After the first chapter or two, the story relaxes into a good rhythm. The main character is a little stiff, but there are enough off-beat characters around him to liven the book up. This book was a good blend. It had a SF base with military intrigue and a bit of mystery thrown in. It could have had some of the minor characters do a little more (like having them pilfer more supplies to add more of a McCale's Navy or A-Team feel), but it definitely has enough to keep the reader's interest. My biggest complaint is that in the beginning there are too many short sentences that don't vary in structure, but this probably only bothers me because I'm an English teacher.
