This small book is a gem. Swimmer photographed the process of building the new Seattle Central Library in 2002. The book begins with color renderings of the project before it was built and photographs of the demolition of the existing building. The bulk of it depicts the construction process, interior and exterior, of this public library designed by Rem Koolhaas. Selected quotations from Koolhass and others involved in the project highlight some of the design concepts and challenges. Those quotations are the only text.

This book gave a great overview on the design and construction of the 6 yr old Seattle Library. Truly an architectural marvel. Once you have visited the library in person, the book answers many questions that may not have been asked or answered during the docent guided tour. I found that it certainly enhanced my experience after visiting this astounding library. Clare M. Jordan

Between the opening in May of 2004 and May of 2008 34,000 people signed up for guided tours at the brand new Seattle Central Public Library. Many more hiked through the eleven story building on their own. Each one of them ought to have taken home the book of photographs by Lara Swimmer. Ms. Swimmer was THE photographer present from the very beginning of the building process. She ventured where no other photographers could go, or have gone since. This slim booklet is a wonderful memento of a visit to Seattle's architectural delight, designed by the Office of Metropolitan Archietecture (OMA) and LMN Architects.Process: Seattle Central Library For those who forgot to buy a copy at the SPL Friends Store, and for arm chair travelers as well, getting it now is a good idea. This book is a must-have.
