Radioman is the biography of Ray Daves, a noncommissioned officer in the U.S. Navy and an eyewitness to World War II. It is based on the author's handwritten notes from a series of interviews that began on the eighty-second birthday of the combat veteran and gives a first-person account of the world's first battles between aircraft carriers.Ray Daves grew up on a small farm near Little Rock, Arkansas. Impatient with school and the prospect of becoming a farmer like his father, he joined the CCC and went from there to the navy, where he learned to use the radio to send messages, and soon found himself in the momentary peacefulness of Pearl Harbor. Most of America's World War II veterans were not in uniform when the war began. Daves is one of the few who was. He could also tell what was happening on the bridge of the famous carrier Yorktown before it went down and of the secretive relationship between the Russian and American forces in Alaska at the time.Carol Edgemon Hipperson's discovery of this one man's inspiring story is shared with great skill and energy. A must-read for those looking for a personal, intimate account of the events of this tumultuous time in American history.
RADIOMAN held my interest better than any WWII history I have read. The story of Ray Daves' role in the Navy leading up to Pearl Harbor and during the rest of the war is a fresh viewpoint that has not been used this effectively. The Time Line and historical notes for each chapter add a huge amount of context and historical detail in a very concise way. The amount of research behind this personal story is very impressive. I gave copies to both of my sons for Christmas.
Wonderful story -

This is a great read. A heartfelt story of a young man who ended up at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 and the events that unfolded in his life during the war. A very easy read and nicely done. With pictures.

Truly a well written story of an enlisted man during a time when our country was at war. Great descriptions of what the Navy men went through during that era. I thought the book was great from start to finish.

Radioman is truly amazing - I enjoyed every page and will read it again and again. I can't wait to give my Dad his copy as I am certain he will enjoy it as much as I have. I was left with a feeling of understanding, not just for the World War II veterans, but for all of our military men and women. The author has captured a perspective of an era I have never seen before, not in any of my history classes or conversations I've had. And, all of the notes to refer to - I think I've learned more about World War II from this "masterpiece" than anything else I've been exposed to.
Absorbing Read

This is a well written, absorbing account of the experiences of one of our vanishing WWII veterans. This would make a great gift, especially to someone of the WWII generation.
