The stars are made of lemon juice... ...and rain makes applesauce. Elbows grow on a tickle tree... ...and rain makes applesauce. Oh, you're just talking silly talk. This is a book of silly talk. It doesn't pretend to be anything else. And yet it is an extraordinary creation, in which author and artist speak to children in a very special way. The fanciful nonsense and marvelously intricate pictures are full of sly subtleties and happy surprises for both eye and ear. It is a book of absurd delights, of tiny, fey graphic details, of captivating scenes and lyrical phrases that stretch the imagination. Children will return to it again and again for new meanings, new images, new responses.
This was one of my absolute favorite books as a child. I used to make my mother check it out of the library again and again. I was fascinated by the elaborate drawings, but the rhymes of the book are also very memorable. I even received a copy as a adult when it came back into print! Now I will share it with my niece who is about the age that I was when I first read the book!

This is a charming book for children to read. Its silly phrases and fantastic illustrations will keep children entertained for countless readings. It is a childhood favorite of mine, one I have shared with numerous students. "Oh you're just talking silly talk," was a favorite saying from my childhood. Once I read this book to my students, they used the phrase too.I'm thrilled to see this book in print again!
A Favorite Book Forever

This is a book that my daughters brought home from the library every-other time they went. They would take it back one week and get it again the next time. I think the reptition of each phrase ending in "rain makes applesauce" made them feel like they we're actually reading. as I recall, they had the book memorized after a while. The illustrations are wonderful also. This year they each received a copy for Christmas. They are now 26 and 27. They didn't open another gift until they read the book from cover to cover. One of the girls is a 3rd grade teacher and she has already used it in her classroom. Her class wrote a sequil....complete with illustrations. We'll never forget RAIN MAKES APPLESAUCE
Every child (and parent) should have this book!

This is a wonderful book that we still treasure... and my daughter is now 22. The illustrations and the text together weave a fanciful, delightful story. It's special silliness has parent and child laughing together; the detailed illustrations with the text dancing on the pages in the same colors adds visual interest to the simple lines and the repeating refrain. It's very rewarding when a little-known, yet worthy book endures.
