I opine that too many children's monographs are riddled with cartoonish, horrifyingly garish "illustrations" of a variety which do nothing but diminish the warmth and power of the words accompanying them. Patricia Klein has collected a sensible selection of poems related to children and published them with nary a picture in sight. Brava. Furthermore, the poems are often works of well-respected, time-tested names, such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Lewis Carroll, Emily Dickinson, Rudyard Kipling, and Edna St. Vincent Millay, to name a few. Author as well as title indices are quite useful features. The contents are charmingly presented in chapters by subject -- with names such as "Come Out and Play!", "Grand Adventures", "Wind, Rain, and Snow", and "Bedtime Blessings". Overall this precious little gem of an anthology hearkens back to a publishing age when titles--even for tots--were graciously arranged and produced with obvious care and concern for the intellectual edification of the intended audience. Immensely worthwhile as a birthday or Christmas gift for any small person whom the giver wishes to be exposed to clean, sober literature offered in an eminently respectable, classic format.
