Reading Detective's standards-based critical thinking activities develop the analysis, synthesis, and vocabulary skills students need for exceptional reading comprehension. The activities are especially effective at helping students understand more challenging reading concepts such as drawing inferences, determining cause and effect, and using context clues to define vocabulary. Students read and analyze short literature excerpts and stories that include fiction and nonfiction content. Then they answer multiple-choice and short-response questions, citing sentence-level evidence to support their answers. B1 level includes mixed-skills throughout and provides an introductory lesson for each skill.
I like the way the questions in the workbook require the student to think about why they responded the way they did. This is reinforced by the student having to back up their responses by noting which paragraph best supports their answer. It is also nice that the story excerpts come from famous literature.
Great teaching tool

This is one of the best reading comprehension activities you can buy. The lessons teach the child what to look for in a reading selection while training them to analyze the logic behind their answers (with supporting detail). The Reading Detective series are great for boosting standardized test scores. The only drawback to this product is the prohibitive cost.
Great Series

My daughter is in the [...] and homeschooled. She LOVES the Math and Science Detective books so we decided to try the Reading Detective. So far it's a hit as well. She actually asks for extra school work when we use these books. They are fun AND educational. You can't ask for more than that.
