For secondary reading specialists and English teachers, this practical resource provides over 200 ready-to-reproduce lessons and exercises to teach and reinforce basic reading skills with students of all abilities. Each lesson includes an Instructor's Page with background information and teaching suggestions followed by one or more Student Skill sheets designed for sequential development of skills that build to higher levels of reading proficiency within each section. Organized into 7 sections: Reading for Deeper Meanings, Reading and Vocabulary, Reading Diagrams: Charts, Tables & Graphs, Reading Pictures: Cartoons & Maps, Reading & Study Skills, Reading & Its Writing Connection, and Reading & Research. These lessons and activities are completely flexible and can be used with individual students or an entire class to meet particular corrective or remedial reading skill needs.
This book has some great activities for a HS English class, as well as for math, science, and social studies. In fact, I may make the math teacher I work with pay me for half since she's used it more than I have so far! The assignments are easy to follow and use information the kids tend to find meaningful in their lives.
Excellent Teaching Tool

This is an excellent book. It really has a ton of very useful, practical activities that can be used in any classroom. One of the best parts about this book is the sheer number of activities that include technical documents, which can be hard to find, and even harder to write test-prep questions for. Section 1, Reading for Deeper Meaning helps students read technical documents for main ideas, fact and opinion, inferences, author's purpose, and more. Section 2 Reading and Vocabulary includes activities on affixes, root words, figurative language, analogies, vocabulary crossword puzzles, and more. Section 3 Reading Diagrams/Charts, etc. gives students practical reading comprehension activities using diagrams, charts, tables, graphs, etc. (and there are a ton of them!) Section 4 Reading pictures/cartoons/maps has just what it indicates. Awesome activities for helping students see beyond the words on the page. Section 5 Reading and Study Skills helps students learn how to outline, compose study questions, and improve their memory. Section 6 Reading and Its Writing Connection helps with mechanics, grammar, and punctuation, including exercises on apostrophes, semi-colons, and dashes, friendly and business letters, supporting main ideas in paragraphs, and making your writing more interesting. Finally, Section 7 Reading and Research helps students learn how to use indexes, dictionaries, and other reference materials. Absolutely a must for any English teacher's library--you will truly not be disappointed.
