This is the first book I ever picked up dealing the Soviet Army (after World War II) and I was expecting to be at sea with political, organizational and weapons systems I knew nothing about (though I wanted to learn more on). Quite the opposite - disguised as a fictional Soviet Assault into West Germany, this is actually an extremely clear and concise primer on Soviet war making capabilities during the 1990s. The information is fascinating, the format (fictional encounter followed by the rationale and research behind it) is engaging, but the real gem here is Steven Zaloga's writing style! It manages to both not presume knowledge of the subject and at the same time quickly explain and make clear very complex issues. Did I mention how engaging his brief characterizations in the fictional segment were? Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to add the rest of his works to my Wishlist!
