"One hell of a good suspense story . . . Mills's book is a spellbinder, ironic in its implications, explosively dramatic in its narrative." -- The New York Times The youngest detective on the New York... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I disagree completely with the prior reviewer. This book is brilliant--precisely because of its writing. And its plotting. And its story, which is gripping. The story is entirely told in the language of the characters. Each character is different in personality and intelligence and understanding of reality. The characters are telling their stories to interviewers. The book consists of transcripts of their interviews, which are describing the events of the story and their points of view. The interviews are bracketed by reproductions of actual police reports. The language of the reports is bureaucratic, unemotional. Effective because it contrasts so starkly with the emotional reporting of the characters' interviews. Most fiction readers will appreciate this book for its excellent writing, plotting, and story. If you love New York City, you get a bonus. This story feels all too true as a New York story. Truth: that is what I find in this book. This is a wonderful story.
