Fourteen-year-old Rhiannon lives high on the bluff of Clodaghcombe with her healer Mom and grandmother. She helps them tend to the sick and wounded from the town below?a town swirling with controversy ever since the arrival of the Norman gentry and the tragic shipwreck that killed the king?s only son and heir to the throne. Rhiannon finds herself transfixed imagining the horrid disaster that took so many youths near her own age. Then tragedy strikes closer to home with the discovery of a stranger?s body near their bluff and accusations of murder leveled at one of their residents. Rhiannon knows she has to do something even though it means standing up to the aristocracy. But with help from a young monk and a mysterious pirate from France Rhiannon hatches a dangerous plan to discover the true murderer?s identity and sets off on a course that could have stunning consequences and perhaps even reveal an astounding secret that could change history.

What a wonderful story! Very Robin Hood-ish. This is a marvelous historical fiction for young people but it is perfect for all ages. It takes you right into the period and makes you feel like you are a part of the story as great stories are supposed to do, bravo Ms. Grove! Please give us another of Rhiannon's adventures soon!!

Fans of Vicki Grove's novels will not be disappointed in this long-awaited book. Grove veers from her traditional realistic fiction to 12th century England and the genre of mystery. The setting, characters and language are rich. Carolyn Phelan of Booklist Magazine said it best when she wrote "Bits of historical fact are integrated into the carefully constructed plot, but the most engaging aspect of the writing is the fine portrayal of even minor characters. Class distinctions are evident, but nobility of spirit and baseness of conduct run across class lines in this vivid historical novel." It is a fine read for those who love a good mystery but enjoy historical fiction as well.

Travel back in time to the middle ages in England. Vicki Grove's painstaking research shows seamlessly in this story of darkness and goodness. Although the book is set in 1120, Rhiannon has emotions that teens today will identify with, which once again highights that human frailties and strengths transcend time.

Attention, you readers who've known Vicki Grove's novels: You are in for a major change of scene. Up to now, her young characters have shared our modern times and troubles, such as homelessness, irresponsible parents, and racism. In her latest book, Ms. Grove, a most lyrical, engaging, and empathetic storyteller, brings her usual sensitivity and thoughtfulness to the life of Rhiannon, a young girl living in 12th century Wales. The author brings this far off time-space intersection to complex, vivid life.
