Historic River Forks Inn sat lonely and nearly deserted in the mountains of Colorado when Bill and Ann decided it would be a perfect retirement project. Little did they know what it takes to run a restaurant. They thought their million dollar nest egg would carry them through the process of recreating the glory days of the old place that started as a stage stop in 1905. In this lively memorial Bill describes his trials and tribulations in dealing with a delightful but derelict group of employees, friends and antagonists. He thought is would be a wonderful retirement, but before long realized it was a serious money pit. There was much work to do but Bill was convinced he was still in his prime. With his motley crew continually screwing up and the government bureaucrats blocking his efforts at every turn, Bill struggled to bring about his dream, while trying to help family and friends enjoy theirs. Would there ever be an end to it? Was he just squandering his life savings? Maybe so, but he was satisfied to go out having a good time at it. He remembered his mother once heard him say, in his youth, "Why do these old people keep hanging around in everybody's way? Why don't they just go ahead and die?" She scolded him good for his youthful, inconsiderate, attitude. He had no idea what life was about in those days, and he was still trying to figure it out in his old age. Maybe it was a mistake, buying this property. His family thought the problems that continually arose caused too much stress for him there at River Forks Inn. But he thought maybe solving problems is what life is all about and it is what makes life worthwhile.
